Touch Controls That Actually Work

Touch Controls That Actually Work

July 4, 2026 · Lukas Brenner

Nothing kills a good mobile game faster than fighting the controls. I've dropped promising titles within minutes because my thumb covered half the screen or the inputs lagged behind my intentions.

The best schemes do one thing: they make the input invisible. When I tap and the exact thing I expected happens, I stop thinking about my hands and start thinking about the game. Neon Slipstream nails this once you switch from tilt to tap steering.

Virtual buttons are a trap for a lot of genres. The games that thrive on phones tend to lean into gestures — swipes, holds, drags — that match how we actually hold the device. Big Rush Luck is a tiny masterclass in doing a lot with a single thumb.

My rule of thumb, pun intended: if a game needs a tutorial longer than its controls deserve, something's wrong. Good touch design explains itself.
